Time for a new bank.  Any large US checks I got were a 7-10 day hold.

It could clear earlier.  TD and RBC both informed me they hold cashier cheques from the US for 15-25 business days.

All banks in Canada do apparently.  But it could clear earlier.

Which bank?

RBC.  Although what I cashed wasn't termed a "cashiers cheque".  I believe it was a Money Order.

Plus I've had large USA personal cheques from my mom (she bought a house here) and same thing...no more than 10 days.

Well your bank is my bank.

I called them, they said they hold it for 25 business days.

Not sure what the difference between a Money Order and a cashier's cheque (bank draft) is.

It says right on their website they hold personal cheques from the US  for 15 days
Fifteen (15) business days after the first business day of deposit if the cheque or other negotiable item is drawn on a U.S. bank and is deposited at a Canadian branch of a Canadian financial institution;

http://www.rbcroyalbank.com/products/deposits/hold-policy.html

That same page says 25 days for international other than the US
Twenty-five (25) business days after the first business day of deposit if the cheque or other negotiable item is drawn on a foreign bank other than a U.S. bank and is deposited at a Canadian branch of a Canadian financial institution.

So the woman on the phone was wrong, 15days not 25.  Still more than 10.  We use the same bank lol

Maybe because small town bank?  I kid you not when I say never more than 10 days for me.

I guess it doesn't matter.  Still sounds like you're getting hosed.

I've had them clear $30k cheque straight away because I look honest.  So anything is possible, they front you the money and if it bounces they take it away after.

It could be cleared in a day, 15 is the max.

The wife and I and another couple are headed out in the Q50S tomorrow morning for Quebec City.  Spending two nights in old Quebec and then a night at the Ice Hotel.  Should be fun, and also an interesting experience staying at the Ice Hotel.

Sounds like fun!   Should be an awesome drive up in the Q50S!  We're doing that route sometime this summer in the S2000.

Fantastic Tom, it would make a great trip in the S2K.  My wife and I like getting into the S2K in the summer and head down Route 1 in Maine.......such a great trip with the top down.  So many nice places to stop along the way and we just love Portland.
