To misquote an old ad for the TR6. Cars are designed to miss not to hit. Or were you trying to miss a gang of young raccoons with their lives still ahead of them?

Here's the damage. The bumper torn, fog light bracket broken, reinforcement behind bumper broken.

It was quite large. But hitting anything 10+ pounds at 80km/h will easily damage a bumper.

Well we always hear don't swerve to avoid an animal in the road for safety reasons. After talking to my insurance company, don't swerve for insurance reasons too!

Turns out my incident with the raccoon is covered by Comprehensive. $300 deductible with no rate increase. She said if I would have swerved to avoid the animal and hit anything to cause damage...a curb, mailbox, etc regardless if I hit the animal..it now becomes a Collision insurance claim. And your rate goes up.

So don't swerve...
