My 2009 RAV4 with the 2.5L engine: sitting at roughly 11.2L / 100km, measured using distance between fill ups and amount of fuel used to fill the tank. 95% city driving though. About 1.5L / 100km off of the current Energuide rating.

However, the revised rating is almost spot on; 11.1L / 100km. Right now I am looking for something easier on gas, while not compromising too much on the size, and drive-ability, so looking very closely at the Subaru XV Crosstrek and the new Legacy.

If you aren't hung up on having something new, a '10-'12 Escape Hybrid would match the Rav4 for utility and would get much better mileage.  It's a closer replacement than a Crosstrek or Legacy.
And some cretins think I hate cars.

If you do more highway than city, a Mazda CX-5 is a better alternative to the Escape Hybrid.  The base engine has the fuel economy and power output as the Crosstrek.

Where do you do most of your driving ?
The city? The hills? Flat lands ?
Get a Prius V , probably same space inside

As much as I like having the size and utility of my RAV4, I barely make use of it. I can count on one of my hands the times where the utility of my RAV4 was useful (moving, bringing home a large 55" TV, and bringing home furniture). I need to downsize and it is not like the RAV4 is going anywhere far away from me; my dad wants my RAV4, as his car is due for replacement. He's been coveting my RAV4 ever since I bought it; he borrows it every time I'm not using it for an extended period of time. The agreement is that he gets my RAV4 as he can better make use of it, and I get a new car.

I live in Vancouver, so mostly city driving. My daily commute is fairly short; it's 13km one way, and it takes half an hour to get to work. Beyond that, there's the usual trip across the border every few weeks and in the winter, the trips to Whistler.

Test drove a Prius V already, and while I like the fuel economy of it, it has no feeling in terms of handling.

I drove to California and back. I did 5.2L/100km the first 1,000km, then averaged 6.1L/100km the final 3,600km when I didn't care anymore and drove 75-85mph, A/C on fully blast because it was 45C outside in the California desert. So considering how fast I was going with full A/C use, I think 6.1L/100km is pretty good.

I would've liked to do less than 5.4L/100km the entire trip, but time was more valuable.

OK.  Real, measured at the pump, economy for the Q5. Early May to today.

9.85 l/100      Total of 5500 kms from new.  The car computer says  9.3 so that is near enough.
Average price of premium around here $1.47 over the period with a high of 1.55 and a low of 1.34 ( Costco!)
Average cost per KM of about 14.5 cents so for me that is about $1750 a year plus of course the 8000 km of regular the Fit uses.

FWIW the Q5 weighs about 4000 lbs. I don't tow and the heaviest load has been 2 people and a few bags of compost.
Lots of shart trips around G but when it does get to go on a 400 road I keep it about about 130 if traffic permits. ( That is my 'comfort speed' now I'm old ...but higher than it was before eye surgery)

Blended stats 2014 May + June + July for my 2012 Chevrolet VOLT

( 826.8 kW.h / 5,235 e-km) + (46.6L / 735 gas km) = 5,969 km total, 87.7% were e-km

Electricity : $78.55 / 5,235 e-km => $1.50 / 100 e-km, 826.8 kW.h @ $0.095/kW.h  => avg 15.8 kW.h / 100 km. Measured at home, at the EVSE input, 20% losses avg included.
Gas : $71.85 / 734 gas km => $9.79 / 100 gaz km, 46.6L  @ $1.542/litre => avg 6.35L / 100 km **
Total: $150.40 / 5,969 km => overall avg. @ $2.52 / 100 km

**My bad : I only noticed lately my summer tires were not inflated enough, anywhere between 244-252kPa (35-36.5psi). Recommend is 261kPa(38psi) but i prefer 278kPa(40psi) to increase "fuel" economy. FIXED

^ I would still prefer the Matrix over the 500, especially in manual.  Not like a major fuel differance.

I'd never buy the 500 for myself.   My size and the blind spot in my seating position drive me nuts.

It's hard to compare because we drive the 500 almost all city, while the Matrix is usually heading out biking or trips.   In a fair comparison even if the 500 was 2L better, I'd prefer to pay the extra for the extra room.

My Elantra GT (2.0L engine) has averaged 7.5 L/100 km over the last 2,400 km of primarily city driving (70/30). Not too shabby.

Damn, I was hoping in that kind of environment your truck would get 11's.  Since that's basically the best fuel economy your going to get, 90-95.

I forget how old AB's truck is, the new GMs may hit 11s on a trip like that.   For a truck, I've basically come to accept that when I do buy one, the average will be in the 14s, Anything better will be gravy.

My friend claims he's averaging around 12s with his new Tacoma.
