2003 Alfa Romeo Kamal concept

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that an Alfa Romeo crossover will grace Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) showrooms by the middle of next year.

FCA boss Sergio Marchionne said all of the “pre-production” work on the vehicle is done, and that production will begin in mid-2016. The announcement comes more than a decade after Alfa showed the Kamal crossover concept at the 2003 Geneva auto show, but never built it, leaving the question of whether next year’s production model will share the concept’s name, which apparently means ‘lotus’ in Sanskrit. We also wonder whether the Alfa CUV will have anything in common with the Maserati Levante, which will be that brand’s first crossover model when it goes on sale later this year.

Alfa’s sole North American model right now is the 4C sports car, with the Giulia sedan set to reach showrooms in early 2016.
