Mazda’s first entry in the fast-growing subcompact crossover segment is the sharp-looking CX-3. Based on the Mazda2 hatchback the company has decided not to bring here, this is the closest we’ll get to a Mazda-badged car smaller than the compact Mazda3.
From an enthusiast point of view, all that’s missing is a manual transmission: all CX-3 models get a six-speed automatic bolted to a 2.0L four-cylinder (shared with the Mazda3 and CX-5) that makes 146 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque.
Like other Mazda models, the CX-3 comes in GX, GS, and GT grades; the first two can be had with either front- or all-wheel drive, while the GT is AWD-only.
Standard kit in GX trim includes electric power steering, push-button start, keyless entry, hill launch assist, 16-inch steel wheels with plastic covers, auto-off halogen headlights, body-coloured side mirrors and outside door handles, variable-speed intermittent wipers, rear wiper/washer, air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth, six-speaker stereo with USB and auxiliary inputs, steering wheel-mounted controls for stereo, cruise and Bluetooth, seven-inch touchscreen with HMI commander, power windows, tilt-and-telescopic steering, trip computer, cloth seats, six-way driver and four-way front passenger manual seat adjustments, and 60/40 split-folding rear seat.
GS models add 16-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, heated side mirrors with turn signal repeaters, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, leather-trimmed steering wheel, shifter and parking brake, overhead console with sunglass holder, soft-touch dash panel with red stitching and satin chrome band, dark red vent bezels, piano black shifter surround, and satin chrome interior accents.
A GS Luxury package adds a sunroof and leatherette-trimmed seats.
Finally, the GT gets 18-inch wheels, sunroof, LED headlights with signature lighting, automatic climate control, seven-speaker Bose stereo, navigation, and leather/’Lux Suede’ seats.
A GT Technology package adds satellite radio, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, smart city brake support, lane departure warning, and automatic high beam control.
