Here’s a taste of what Volvo’s next full-size luxury sedan, the S90, will look like.

As you can see, details are sketchy, but the streaky image of the car’s going-away view suggests bracket-shaped taillights that build on a theme started with the XC90 sport utility. The profile sketch tells us that, indeed, the S90 will be a sedan (whoa), and it will get the same ‘hammer of Thor’ signature front lighting as the XC90.

Also see here are a couple of spy photos captured by the UK’s CAR magazine; judging by the over-the-top camo this (presumable) prototype wears, Volvo’s really not keen on anyone getting a good look at this car before it shows up on the manufacturer’s display in the Motor City.

Here’s what we know for sure: the car will be built on the same ‘scalable product architecture’ (SPA) platform as the XC90. From there, we can say with some certainty it will be offered with that crossover’s 316-hp 2.0L turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine, and it’s not a stretch to suggest it may also come with the XC90’s 400-plus hp hybrid powertrain. A shared platform and powertrains make AWD a very strong possibility, too.

The Swedes’ next big sedan was inadvertently previewed a few weeks ago when images of a toy model were leaked; all should become clear in a few weeks when Volvo pulls the wraps off its new flagship sedan in Detroit.
