IIHS doles out awards to 2013, 2014 models. Civic first small car ever to get PICK+ award.

Five vehicles have received the TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation while another has been bestowed with the TOP SAFETY PICK award after recent testing by the IIHS.

The new-for-2014 Subaru Forester continues the nameplate’s tradition of being an award winner, picking up a TOP SAFETY PICK award in the small SUV class. It may be possible for the Forester to get an upgrade to PICK+ later in the spring after IIHS releases its new small overlap frontal crash test results for small SUVs.

However, big winners are the 2013 Honda Civic (in 2-door and 4-door guises, in the small car class), Volvo XC60 (midsize luxury SUV), Lincoln MKZ (midsize luxury car), and 2014 Mazda 6 (midsize moderately priced car). All have been given the coveted TOP SAFETY PICK+ award after receiving good ratings in the Institute’s moderate overlap front, side, rollover and rear tests, plus good or acceptable ratings in the new small overlap test. Honda can also be happy with having the first small car to ever earn a PICK+ from IIHS.
