Recommendation made after 2011 fatal crash of driver who hadn’t slept in three days

In a coroner’s report of a fatal crash in Quebec in 2011, the coroner has recommended intensifying awareness of driving while fatigued and making such actions illegal.

The crash, which resulted in the deaths of five people, was caused by a driver who reportedly hadn’t slept in three days.

Sébastien Cormier was driving himself and four others to their shared workplace, Pigeon 2006, a company that transports chickens. Cormier was known for using methamphetamine in order to stay awake during night shifts.

In the report, Coroner Quoc Bao Do compared driving while tired to doing the same while drunk. He stated the accident was avoidable and caused by fatigue and lack of sleep.
