Nope, it wasn’t a dream: for 2017, Porsche really has moved to fuel-saving turbo power for its 911, a point driven home today with the addition of all-wheel drive Carrera 4 models to the lineup. The AWD models join the rear-drivers announced in early September. Today’s news also includes the latest Targa model, offered in Canada in Carrera 4 and 4S trims only.

Carrera 4 and 4S models share the base two-wheel drive car’s 3.0L turbo flat six, which makes 370 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque, or 420 hp/368 lb-ft in the 4S. As before, transmission choices are a seven-speed manual, or dual-clutch PDK automatic, also with seven ratios.

Carrera 4S cars can be optioned with Porsche’s new rear-wheel steering system, as in the Carrera S.

Differences between rear- and all-wheel drive cars go beyond the mechanical: Porsche says the light strip across the back “now produces an especially distinctive effect thanks to its three-dimensional design.” Carrera 4 and 4S models also get unique rear fenders that are 44 mm wider than on RWD versions.

Otherwise, the Carrera 4 and 4S share new headlights with four-point running lights, new taillights (also with ‘four-point’ brake lights), updated door handles, and a redesigned rear lid with vertical louvers replacing the old car’s horizontal ones.

Canadian fuel consumption figures aren’t available yet, but Porsche promises the turbo engines are up to 12 percent more efficient.

Naturally, more driven wheels means more money, and in this case, exactly $7,900, putting Carrera 4 pricing at $110,100, and the Carrera 4S’ MSRP is $126,100. Add $14,000 to both figures for Cabriolet and Targa models.

Porsche says Canadian sales of the Carrera 4 models will begin in the second quarter of 2016, a few weeks behind the planned March arrival of the Carrera cars.
