Mazda 6 diesel racing engine migrates to Lola chassis for 2014
After campaigning the Mazda 6 SKYACTIV-D in Grand-Am’s GX class, the Japanese automaker is upping the ante and going after the big boys in the United SportsCar Championship top prototype class.
“This is the most significant step Mazda has taken towards returning to the global racing stage since our overall victory at Le Mans in 1991,” said John Doonan, director of Mazda Motorsports. “And thanks to our SKYACTIV-D Mazda6 racecars winning nine of 12 Rolex GRAND-AM GX races and the GRAND-AM GX Manufacturers Championship this year, we’re confident that our two prototype cars will challenge the best North America has to offer.”
Mazda will again partner with Sylvain Tremblay and SpeedSource Engineering for the 2014 prototype campaign and the automaker is also open to the idea of supporting teams interested in running the Mazda 6 diesel in the GT Daytona class.
The new prototype will make its first public appearance at the “Roar Before the 24” test at Daytona from January 3-5 with its inaugural race at the Rolex 24 at Daytona on January 25-26.
