The Consumer Electronic Show, or CES, is running January 6–9 in Las Vegas and a few manufacturers are using the opportunity to showcase their newest technologies and craziest concepts. Then there’s Faraday Future, a fledgling, Chinese-funded EV company with big dreams and a tall order to fill. And what better way to unveil your all-electric, Batmobile-looking FFZero1 racecar concept than to take advantage of the high-tech buzz surrounding CES.

High-performance and electric is the direction FF took with their first concept. The 1,000 hp racecar concept, which can go 0-100 in under three seconds and reach a top speed of over 320 km/h, is also a study in style and engineering. In fact, the manufacturer based the FFZero1 on a modular engineering system optimized for electric vehicles called Variable Platform Architecture, or VPA, a system that will underlie any future production model by the maker. Of course, the FFZero1 is one-of-a-kind, meant above all to showcase the platform’s versatility and – why not – some visionary features, such as the smartphone dock located at the center of the steering column meant to possibly integrate said phone into the car’s computer.

The manufacturer also announced their collaboration with Leshi Internet Information & Technology, or Letv, a major Chinese entertainment and media firm. And of course, if you’re going to call yourself a car manufacturer, you’re going to need a manufacturing plant to make good on your claim. That’s why Faraday Future also announced that they’re dedicating $1 billion to the creation of a 3-million square foot facility located in North Las Vegas that could ultimately employ 4,500 people.

So, a lot of maybes and ifs and soons for Faraday Future. A little bit like Tesla, which would obviously be their main competitor in the realm of fancy-pants EV technologies, but Musk has proven that ambition sells, so now let’s see how well FF will do. No pressure.
