Adding yet more fuel to the aluminum-vs-steel-truck fires, today Ford announced the aluminum 2015 F-150 Crew Cab has scored a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration (NHTSA). A five-star rating is the highest score a vehicle can achieve in crash testing. No word on the Super Cab models yet.
Ford went all-in with their huge gamble when they went to aluminum for the new F-150. And by all accounts, it looks like it’s paid off. It’s been rated as the most fuel efficient, it can tow the highest payload, and now, it tops the safety charts to take home the entire pot. Maybe this will shut down all the aluminum naysayers.
Interestingly enough, the aluminum 2015 F-150 rates better than the outgoing steel version, which only received a four-star rating.
To be fair, the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, made up of a more traditional steel body construction also received a five-star rating, as did the Kia Sedona. But the smaller Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, Toyota’s Tundra and Tacoma, and the Ram 1500 take home a four-star rating.
