Another player will join the Nissan Micra in the “Under-10K Pricing” club. Announced yesterday at the Montreal International Auto Show, GM will now be creating a duo of super affordable cars by throwing in the 2016 Chevrolet Spark.

The Spark will actually be the cheapest compact hatch in Canada, priced at $9,995 (only three dollars below the Micra). You might remember that, not so long ago, Mitsubishi wanted their share of that cake by significantly lowering the price of the Mirage. But that’s a thing of the past, as the pricing for the Mirage has now gone back up over $12k, leaving the Micra and now, the Spark, to defend this particular category.

The American subcompact hatchback has also been redesigned for the occasion and introduced into its second generation with a slightly more serious and muscular look that no longer makes it look like a cartoon. GM also promises to pack their little hatch with a fleet of features and technologies to please the users, including OnStar with 4G LTE Wifi hotspot connectivity. It has also received a 1.4L engine, traded from the 1.2L Ecotec it sported until last year, for better fuel economy. Proof that smaller isn’t always better when it comes to eco-friendliness.

The 2016 Chevrolet Spark is already available on GM’s online catalog and is yours to grab for the modest starting price of $9,995 – that is, before taxes and fees.
