Throwing around the idea of a crossover
« on: August 31, 2015, 02:50:23 pm »
So,

I know I've always maintained the fact that I hate crossovers and would never want anything other than a sedan or a real truck.  BUT, hear me out:

Our recent camping trip was such a success with the family that I feel the desire to emulate it again and again.  Now, as nice as the car was pulling a small trailer tent, I have to admit, it was overloaded and not an ideal vehicle for such a trip.

As such, I find myself throwing around the idea of trading it in for a used CUV.

Around the $20k mark.

Here would be a list of requirements, in descending order of importance:

3500lb min towing capacity
Reliable
relatively fuel efficient (no 4-speed 2.5 Foresters please)
luxury?!?
AWD

Something like this:

What do you think?  Suggestions?

Just go back country camping with tents and camping mats.

A Ford Edge would also work.  I imagine the depreciation is pretty steep on them.

Highlander?

I also think you'll have a hard time finding something with a 3500 lb towing capacity that is also good on gas.

I think you're full of crap for all your phoney boasts about towing with a sedan.  :rofl2:

Just kidding.

Maybe you can buy a used Outback that can tow 3500lbs across the prairies for $20k.

Just because I did it for a 3 hour trip doesn't mean I'd want to do it to visit my brother in NB.

Am I crazy?  I'd be spending about $200 more per month than I currently am, and would be in a vehicle that is about the same age and mileage than what we currently have...

Worse fuel economy, but more capability, better in winter, larger, etc.

In before FOB.  ;D

Highlander, Pilot, Edge, Traverse, the usual suspects. None are great on fuel. The Outback 3.6R might qualify, but it definitely isn't good on fuel and resale is very high.

I wouldn't count on a Murano.

Why do you discount the Murano?  Reliability?  Our Nissan has been good to us so far, and by all accounts the CVT's that come with the V6's are the best ones.

Seems that the CVT can be troublesome...

What about a minivan? Caravan, for example can tow up to 3600 lbs and would be relatively cheap. Would also carry a bunch more stuff, and more space.
Fuel economy would be similar

Chevy Tahoe will check every box except FE. 6spd. 5.3L V8 is the one to get. 4Runner would be a good choice for towing too but depreciation is slow.

+1, but make sure they have the proper towing pkg (especially with Hondas).

Otherwise, Ford Edge is a pretty good bet for value at your budget level.

I will come back with a Toyota Sienna  AWD, meets the requirements more than any other vehicle.  Fuel efficient, reliable, roomy, tows 3500lbs, super cheap to insure.

+1 for a van. We see them towing tent trailers all the time in rural MB. Probably can get away with FWD in these (flat) parts too.

1) MDX..so at least it's a little bit interesting to drive.

2) Rav4 with a V6 is a little hot rod and because of that is fun to drive.

3) If you want full luxe, Lexus RX3**

Reliable, cheap to insure, will haul any trailer you would want, proper 4x4, cheap to fix/maintain and you can get a really nice 1/2 ton for about $20k

$20K MDX is getting pretty old.  Can get a newer Highlander/Pilot for the same dough.

Personally, I like both the Highlander and 4Runner - 4Runner is hard on gas though.  4Runners hold their value so well it's ridiculous though.

True, because everyone usually upgrades from a tent trailer

Yup. Forgot about the V6 RAVs. Hard to find tough.
