This would make a great replacement for my MKV GTI.

Interior quality is astoundingly good. The doors close with the muted authority of a Bentley.

Lets hope this is also true for the vanilla Golf and GTI, and that we can get a high spec Golf like the Euros and not just a slightly more substantial feeling econobox.
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

I do recall VW being the leader a while back in regards to interior quality for a "regular" car. They went sour for a while recently. I agree with mmret, hoping that the great interior quality will once again be standard across the line up and once again set the benchmark for other manufacturers to aspire to.

I want this for $20k and I want it to get 80MPG.  Rabble rabble rabble!

Sounds like it'll be a winner, for those with the cash to fork over.  Good utilitarian vehicle.  With my growing upset with Subaru, this may be in my future.

Powerful yet luxurious hatchback available with a stick shift. Sounds exactly like something I would like but I've never been able to get excited about the Golf R models.

VW interior quality.

I just don't see VW interiors as being night and day different to others in it's class. Marginally better? You could possibly convince me with a lot of effort.

I'm much more concerned with reliability, which is much improved at VW, but it comes after a long history of hit or miss issues.

I'd like to hear a VW and Bentley door closed back to back. I'm more than a bit skeptical.

:iagree:

The new R looks to have improved upon an already really great machine with the last gen R.  I can't wait to try one out..  Same goes for the new GTI for that matter -- of which they had two at the show.

Nice to hear that it will still be available as a five-door and with a manual transmission. I'm not so sure that it's worth the premium over a GTI, but will for sure be worth a look (and maybe a test drive) in a few years.

Makes me want to buy a regular Golf and install a six-tip exhaust pipe and replace the model designation with a fake "Golf RS" badge.

Last model R was only about 3-4 grand more then the similarly equipped GTI.  If it's the same difference this time around it will be worth it for the big bump in power and AWD being a bonus.

I like it.  The bump in power combined with AWD makes this a very appealing car.  If VW keeps the pricing in line, it could be a pretty desirable car.

I agree 100%. If the pricing is right the WRX and STi are in big trouble IMO.

This looks like an excellent all around package.   Would certainly consider as a future replacement to my WRX.  Any word on what the availability will be like in Canada?  Sounds like more than the last gen, but will it still be fairly limited??

Also how is the AWD system in this thing?  I recall some less than glowing reviews of the previous gen Golf R's performance and that it really didn't feel much sportier than the GTI.   Any experience from the reviewers here??

On paper, I'm very interested.

Its the AWD that I'm really interested in. My GTI+ is having a really hard time putting any power down this winter and I'm short about 50hp/tq what the new R will have.

They say it can send "almost" 100% to the rear. Of course, until anybody drives one, its just marketing. Wonder if its similar to what is in the TT?

Quote
This latest version of Haldex all-wheel drive can send almost 100 percent of power to the rear wheels, and, unusual for VW products, the stability control can be turned off completely. It is equipped with VW’s brake-induced torque vectoring.

Haldex is slip n' grip - it's usually outclassed on the road by lesser systems with smarter electronics...until you get into the deep stuff - it'll probably be similar to the Volvo set-up and less like the Hyundai set-up, I'd think.  Source: my as$, so accept it as true.

Yeah, it's the "similarly equipped" thing that is a problem for me. I don't even want leather, navi or a sunroof, so it sucks that I have to pay extra for that on a Golf R.

My current GTI is pretty much a base model and I expect I'd want a MKVII the same way, so I'd be looking at close to ten grand extra for the R.
