Cottage is KEY

:nono: Cottage is work. I can fly out out of YYZ for the same number of weeks to exotic locations for much much cheaper  :)
:iagree:
We are selling my mom's cottage by Balm Beach
It not on the water, needs work , and it a 2.5 hr without  traffic for me to get there  ::)
It is quiet in my area on the weekend then it is by the cottage
Offer should be going though in a couple of weeks

A 2000 sq ft single garage detached or maybe semi detached. Cookie cutter suburbia construction. Mediocre finishings.

Prices are a lot higher than even 3 years ago.

To get a house I'd actually WANT as opposed to settle for (in an acceptable location) I'd be looking at probably $1.5 to $2.0.
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.
That makes me feel angry!

We had the cottage option and it is work. Like keeping up two places and the need to go there can become boring...it's the same place everytime. Break-ins can be an issue and winterizeing is a chore. Capital gains when you sell a second residence. I can see the cottage if you spend winters in sunny climes (like renting a condo in Florida or other) and come back in the summer to stay in cottage country. I think that might work well and you don't need to own a place down south.
I prefer a small trailer to a cottage. Maintenance is very little and you can go to lot's of places very ecconomically and take a small version of your stuff with you. I have photo's  at the lighthouse at Cape Spear Newfoundland and also at Mile 1 Victoria and you can cook all of your own food. Still, it's nice to just spend time at home just enjoying your garden and patio and working on your latest project. As time goes on this becomes the greater part of it. The familiar stuff that you aquire over a lifetime needs some place to be for as long as you need it.

My last trip to the family camp  :):

I get the fun part but we had to build ours by boat and snowmobile as there was no access road at the time. Then build the road and some moron decided we needed grass to cut FFS.

Never made it up to Duck Mountain but I have fond memories of camping in Riding Mountain National Park back in the '80s.

As for the $700k first mentioned in this thread, here's a nice house in Fredericton at that price:

Thought I'd revive this one, starting a new one didn't seem necessary.  I was looking for something entirely unrelated and came across this website.  Found a couple of places in MB that would make someone from ON cry.  Mostly because they'd be all alone here, partially because, damn! Look what $450,000 buys in MB!!

http://www.landwatch.com/BENITO-Manitoba-Canada-Farms-and-Ranches-for-sale/pid/200392922

A 3000 sq ft log (LOG!  :o ) cabin, 160 acres of LAND (that's like ALL of Toronto FYI  ;))...outbuildings; a camera that takes pictures of mooses, bears and deer; some guy who catches fish and kills big game! (do you think maybe those pics are of the current owners? Nah...I'm sure it comes stocked with PEOPLE here too! AWESOME! )  Looks like a pretty awesome place to live.  Not sure what kind of work a person would do up there...sell insurance I guess.

Almost makes me feel like shopping...almost.

thats a nice piece of property......unfortunately its 300 miles north of the middle of nowhere. Can't really use that on a weekend if you live anywhere in a big city.
Lighten up Francis.....

Blunderwriter, hate to break the news, but when I read the ad, its $450,000US. Ouch!

Missed that...but, even at 27% it's only $571,500, which gets you what in the COTU? A 900 sq ft 50 yr old bungalow on a driveway for your yard
Actually, around here $571,500 does not even get you that 50 year old bungalow. Try more like $780k. ;)

Both fixer-uppers?  I dunno, if I had the money, I'd take the log cabin and 160 acres of Raptor land any day...

I bet it doesn't have:  Mains drains, natural gas, high speed internet or any of the other things that make up civilization.  And it is a long way from anywhere. Why would one even want to visit let alone live there?

Does it have an airstrip?  Or even a real road from 83 ?

Notice Fob that that little $780k cottage is a knock down. You are supposed to buy it, knock it down and build a bigger house on the property. The real estate ad even suggests that.

Thats fine....you have 160 acres to play with.......a small home lot somewhere in town would be a lot of hell no in my books.

You're mixing up properties. That $780k cottage has a 69x125 ft lot.

Calling that big-ish is just as bad as asking $800k for it.  :P

Great location and walking distance to everything. That place will be gone in a flash. Bulldoze the house and put up a 3500 sq. ft. house and poof...+$2M.
