Real Estate Prices In Your Area
« on: January 28, 2013, 11:02:05 pm »
One of the other recent threads made me think about real estate prices in other places in Canada.  It always has amazed me to see other prices in Canada, namely places like Toronto, Vancouver, etc.  So just for the heck of it, let's see what $700k would buy in YOUR area.  I know that $700k will be very expensive in some areas (like mine), but very cheap in others.  It will be interesting to see the difference from place to place.

This is one example of what $700k will get you where I live.

$700K would get you as palace out my way......No joke.  I saw a couple 5000+ sq.ft homes for that here.  Even $500K gets you a massive house.  My 4 bedroom house with a private beach and boatlaunch would be millions in a large city I would guess.

30 minutes from downtown Winnipeg 700k buys:

Newish 3,500 square feet
Triple heated garage
1.5 – 5 acres, landscaped
Upgraded fixtures throughout, hardwoods, etc.
Maybe a detached heated shop
Maybe an inground pool and/or hot tub

You can get a nice little acreage with a decent house, needing very little work and a shop. Or you can move into the city........  :hurl:
Lighten up Francis.....

700k would but an apt. There are no houses under 900k and those are tear downs. It's nuts.

Around here for 900 you can buy the place I described above, a new 911 and a new Lexus LS.

^ That entire neighbourhood is teardown city due to large lots and dinky houses.  Mostly nice, but some of the new McMansions are just hideous.

Ottawa gives you so much choice!

If you want to live right downtown, you could get a 1bdrm condo for that
http://www.realtor.ca/propertyDetails.aspx?propertyId=11574055&PidKey=2087133421

Or if you wanted to be pretty much right downtown you could get a nice little older home
http://www.realtor.ca/propertyDetails.aspx?propertyId=12541120&PidKey=-1459212129

If you didn't mind living on the QC side you could be pretty close to downtown and get a newer / larger home
http://passerelle.centris.ca/Redirect2.aspx?CodeDest=MACLE&NoMls=OU9071930&Source=WWW.REALTOR.CA&Langue=E

If you want to be in the burbs you can get a nice home
http://www.realtor.ca/propertyDetails.aspx?propertyId=12721437&PidKey=-1768252884

Or if you want to live in the country yet still only be 15min away from everything you can be out in an acreage or more easily.
http://www.realtor.ca/propertyDetails.aspx?propertyId=12776426&PidKey=-1961804126

But a $700k house (except for downtown) is a rare / high end commodity in Ottawa for sure.

Closest to where I live is this one:

http://www.realtor.ca/PropertyDetails.aspx?&PropertyId=12366764&PidKey=507234434

The hospital lottery house shown in the original post reminds me that my daughter's piano teacher won the house two years ago, and the one from 3 years ago is down the street from me and is for sale again again...nobody seems to want it, i guess the rooms are too small.

My diesel car self-identifies as an electric vehicle.

It will be knocked down within a week of the sale going through.

Yep, buy the lot for $700k and build a 3500 sq. ft. house for $800k and you have a $1.4M dollar house within walking distance of everything including the lake. I did the math and no.

$700k for a chunk of land with a crackshack on it....this whole live close to downtown lifestyle baffles me. Id much rather be able to have a fire in my backyard, shoot some popcans on my property and have a shop where I can fiddle with cars without being asked what that burning smell is. So what happens if you are poor in TO, not like "I live under the bridge" but like a philosophy major working at A&W or the old guy working at your gas station....do you buy a house in Quebec or Manitoba and then commute everyday??

700k would buy you a reasonably equivalent house to the thread opener, in Niagara On The Lake. Rothhesay is nice but one suspects that winters are not kindly and heating would not include natural gas at this point. I suspect that $1.4m houses will be a hard sell in a declining province. Location, location, lo...well you know. Still Bronte has a nice fish and chip shop. I am not going to post MLS refs...anyone can go there and research.
I think that in NB you have to research where the water comes up to.
