It's funny, adequate seems to have negative connotations, when really it is quite literally, perfectly acceptable.  To Me, Adequate meets my requirements.  Excellent, or better than adequate always exceeds them.  A typical mid-size sedan has adequate rear leg space as per my requirements.  A larger sedan such as a Genesis would exceed them and be considered to have excellent rear leg space.

THAT being said, the requirements change for the class of vehicle.  I don't expect a compact sedan to necessarily have enough rear seat leg room to fully meet my requirements.  I understand that if someone tall sits behind me, I may be required to move the seat up.  Therefore, most compact sedans would be considered 'adequate' for the class, based on that compromise.  That being said, I consider it a standard of the Mid-size class to have enough leg room for two tall people to sit one in front of the other without any issues.  Any mid-size that compromises on this value is deficient in that regard.  A Full-size will allow two tall people to sit in one in front of the other with inches to spare.

Ergo, an IS fails in the rear seat room as a mid-size sedan.  It wins in so many other areas, but not rear seat room.

OH, and I can add the Legacy to the list of cars that are adequate, too.

Well, then, maybe it shouldn't have been brought up in a thread about what mid-size sedan to buy.  ;)

I'd add a Chrysler 300 into the equation, either the S or Hemi C version. Gorgeous cars. I currently own a 2007 300C. Big, powerful, very comfortable for HW driving, and almost zero issues in 7 years/150,000Km of driving.

Can't mention the 300!   It's supposed to be mid-size only!   ;D

Yeah mid-sized Lexus is the ES / GS

Which is NOT the same experience AT all as the IS.  Well, at least the ES isn't, anyway. The ES strikes me as a very 'old person' car.  Not only from the outside, but from the inside, too.  I've never driven one, either, but I'm sure it can best be described as 'sedate'. The IS despite it's shortcomings in size (if you have a family) is a very attractive car for the driving enthusiast.

I actually like the ES - and I am 30 - unfortunately these are close to impossible to find in MB!

If you don't care about FWD, the ES is easily one of the nicest luxury cars for the money - or even a lot more money.

^ I agree. And the new ES actually looks pretty nice in the tin.

I think it's the most attractive execution of the "Lexus snout" in terms of classy appearance.

I'm a fan too, and the Hybrid has amazing city fuel economy for a car of that size.

Count me in on the ES bandwagon too. (with the usual caveat of that horrible mouse thing)

I wonder if they would get conquest sales if they had AWD in it or if it would just end up stealing GS sales.
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.
That makes me feel angry!

Here is an article recommending the Legacy as the mid-size car to get:

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-midsize-sedan/

Some good points in there.

The answer is Subaru. The question is irrelevant.  ;D

Well, we are still having this little debate in the family. I'm now dead stuck on the Subaru, but there's a disagreement about the trim. I'm leaning towards Touring with Technology Package, and my family doesn't want the technology package.

I'm arguing that as it is $1200 dollar for additional safety features that will probably become way more commonplace a few years from now, and can make the car much more safer. My dad say it's unnecessary (he drives a car that had the option for ABS, traction control, and stability control, but refused to pay for it, and says its a waste of money to get those safety features). Thoughts?

If you are paying for the vehicle, get the tech package and tell your father to stuff it.

Factoring re-sale value, that won't even be $1200 of difference. The eyesight is extra insurance. Even if it prevents just one front-end accident during the car's lifetime, it will have been more than worth it. That's not even considering the safety aspect...

BTW the Touring + Techs are pretty rare on dealer lots. Here in Montreal, only 1/4 dealers I visited had one, and that was only due to an error. I ended up ordering one last week, which is a 3 months wait. Not sure how long you can wait, but it might be wise to wait for the 2nd year model -bound to be fixes on the first year refresh.
