The Prius C Technology trim adds the touchscreen and six-speaker system with satellite radio, voice recognition, 15-inch alloy wheels, push-button start, keyless entry, cruise control, console box, tonneau cover, seat height adjustment and a 60/40 split-fold rear seat to the standard Prius C. The $2,240 Premium Package replaces the 15s with 16-inch alloys and further added fog lamps, a sunroof, heated SofTex leatherette front seats and a synthetic leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Automatic climate control is available on all Prius C trims and is operated by one of the most unfussy, ergonomic and easy-to-use systems around.

Cargo volume is a solid 481 litres but much of that is height and not depth. With the seats up, the hatch area is shallow so I was forced to stack my grocery bags – resulting in the tragic loss of 12 egg souls and a last minute switch from omelette to pizza for dinner.

It did take my sister-in-law’s laundry hamper and goody bag though, as well as my daughter, wife and aforementioned sister-in-law on a long and comfortable drive, which only serves to compound the brilliance of the Prius C’s economy. It was fully laden with even the (useless) middle seat taken up by luggage and still managed to sit around the 4.5 L/100 km mark for that journey.

If you want a car that looks good inside and out, is capable of handling the majority of a young family’s weekly tasks, and returns the absolute best possible fuel economy – look no further.
