I may have to tread lightly this week, as I know that many truck owners are more loyal to their truck brand than they are their religions. I am not one of them; give me the best truck for my criteria, and brand is of no concern. I suppose that makes me ideal for evaluating a truck on its merits.

Good thing, because that is my plan this week. Though I wish it hadn’t been so long since I was in one of the Sierra’s competitors, I do have some recollection of some of the competition. The Ford F-150 I have driven a few times recently, and I drive my own Titan at least once every few weeks, and as outdated as it is, it still compares well to some of the newer trucks, believe it or not.

Being somewhat fed up with my Titan at times, I like to evaluate my test trucks as if I were looking to buy one. My criteria may be totally different from yours though, so please keep that in mind. I’d like a truck that is comfortable day in and day out, and I don’t need a ton of fancy features: A/C, cruise and power windows do me just fine. I need a lot of cabin space for my tools and gear, so flip up seats and a flat floor are essential.

My Sierra tester is a short box (5 feet, 8 inches) in crew cab format — the same as my Titan. I have learned over the years to hate the short box, so for me a regular box (6 feet 6 inches) would be my choice. But that’s a minor detail here, as one can order a Sierra in a multitude of configurations to suit.

Ideally, I’d like my truck to be $35,000 or less, so my tester is out the window as it comes in at over $50,000. Although it starts life at an MSRP of $39,785 for the Sierra 1500 4WD Crew Cab SLE, adding features like the off-road package ($4,705), sunroof ($1,325) and LPO package ($4,450) put it way out of my league.
