It wasn’t really that long ago that a truck was for working and working only. But in the last decade or so trucks have really become family haulers, luxury transportation and status symbols. Along the way some utility has been gained and some has been lost, but I think in the end consumers are winners. Fierce competition has led to a massive selection and massive improvements – and the manufacturers aren’t hurting either.

This week I’m behind the wheel of the 2013 Ram 1500 – upgraded for 2013 with a new eight-speed automatic transmission that promises to offer better fuel consumption while still allowing for good acceleration when towing.

But powering my Ram tester is not the big kahuna 5.7L HEMI, but Chrysler’s smallest offering in the Ram lineup: the 3.6L V6 that makes 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque, its output rivalling some V8s from less than a decade ago.

My tester is an Outdoorsman model crew cab with 4×4 that has a base starting price of $41,295. To me that seems steep for a V6 truck but it does have a lot of features! Added to the base truck are desirable features like a 3.55 rear axle ratio for better hauling, air suspension (again for better towing capacity), tow mirrors, comfort group with heated steering wheel and front seats, luxury group, which adds leather steering wheel, power mirrors and more, plus the UConnect package for $1,200.

Once added up my truck comes in at just under $51,000 after all the fees and options – certainly not a very economical solution if you are looking for a work truck. As a play truck though, it may do just fine – and this week I’m going to play hard with it!

MSRP as tested (including destination): $50,825
