One year before GMC is due to completely redesign its heavy-duty full-size pickup, the the Sierra HD moves into 2014 with minor trim updates.

The Sierra HD is also sold as the Chevrolet Silverado HD; light-duty 1500 versions of the Sierra are covered in a separate buyer’s guide entry.

Available in regular, extended and crew cab bodystyles, the Sierra HD comes with a choice of 6.0L gasoline V8 or 6.6L Duramax diesel V8. Both are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission: gas engines use a Hydra-Matic 6L90, and diesels get an Allison 1000 gearbox.

Trim levels include WT (work truck), SLE, SLT and Denali, all of which can be had in 2WD or 4WD, and with either single- or dual-wheel rear axle.

WT models come standard with 17-inch wheels, air conditioning, keyless entry, OnStar with turn-by-turn navigation, heavy-duty cooling package, chrome bumpers, automatic headlights, cruise control, front recovery hooks, variable intermittent wipers, overhead console, vinyl floor covering, upper and lower glove boxes, driver information centre, tilt steering, driver’s sunshade pocket, passenger sunshade mirror, 40/20/40 split front bench seat in cloth or vinyl, and AM/FM stereo. Crew and extended cab models have a fold-up rear seat, and four-wheel drive models get a lever-operated 4WD transfer case.
