It’s back! The 5.0 that is, the engine that helped make the Mustang a legend in the first place. For 2011, the 5.0-litre V8 returns in the Mustang GT, now with 32 valves, Ti-VCT (variable valve timing) and 412 horsepower!

Hey, I’m back too! Unfortunately I’m only a legend in my own mind, coming out of a small, low-powered, nimble-handling machine to a powerhouse that is considerably larger. Some adjustments need to be made but I’ll survive.

It’s not all about the engine for 2011 either: after some major upgrades for 2010 in suspension and chassis tweaking, the 2011 Mustang takes it even further with improved dynamics with changes such as electric power assist steering, larger brakes, an improved rear lower control arm and stiffened rear stabilizer bushings.

My tester starts at $38,499, and on top of the base GT my tester has some essential items such as: HID headlights, which add $600: a 3.73-ratio, limited-slip differential for $500 and the ever-important GT brake package that adds 19-inch wheels with 255/40/R19 tires and Brembo brakes for $1,700.

A block heater ($80), security package ($350), premium trim package ($500) and a rear video camera ($300) are added to my tester for a final as tested price of $42,659. If the numbers don’t add up that’s because there is also a $30 environment fee.

It has been exactly one year since I drove the 2010 Ford Mustang GT and from what I remember I loved it. With the new engine and chassis tweaks I can only imagine I’ll love this one more!
