NEW FOR 2014:
A high-performance counterpart to the i3 city car, the i8 is a high-tech hybrid sports car that wraps a carbon-fiber reinforced plastic passenger compartment around a turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine (similar to that in the Mini Cooper) with an electric motor. Perhaps that doesn’t sound exciting, but total power output of 362 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque (the gas engine makes 231 hp, with the balance coming from the electric motor) make a better case for this car’s performance.
The i8 is AWD, with electricity powering the front axle via a two-speed auto transmission, and gasoline spinning the rears through a six-speed auto.
Standard equipment includes LED 20-inch wheels, head- and taillights, heated windshield washer jets, knee airbags, power-folding side mirrors, dynamic cruise control, tilt-and-telescopic steering, six-way power-adjustable heated front seats finished in leather and cloth, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, 11-speaker stereo with subwoofer and hard-disc media storage, Bluetooth, satellite radio, navigation, and a head-up display.
