Volkswagen To Drop 2.5L For New 1.8 Turbo

Reviving the 1.8T base engine will mean the end of the odd-numbered cylinder 2.5L engine at Volkswagen.

The Truth About Cars is reporting Volkswagen’s 2.5L 5-cylinder engine will go the way of the dodo, making room for a new 1.8L turbo mill on base versions of the Jetta, Passat, and Beetle. The next generation Golf will also get the new motor when it debuts in 2015. This is meant to improve fuel economy for base vehicles as the 2.5L returns 9.9L/100km city, 6.2L/100km highway.

Another update for the Jetta: independent rear suspension replaces the old-school beam axle construction on the low-cost Golf with a trunk. But, you will have to live with electric power steering.
