Vancouver, British Columbia – Vancouver is receiving its first all-electric Canada Post delivery trucks. The postal service said that the city has been selected to receive the eStar delivery vehicles for testing due to its rigorous terrain.
With over 7,300 vehicles travelling more than 79 million kilometres per year, Canada Post has the largest delivery fleet in the country, and has purchased the first four all-electric step vans in Canada. The eStar, built by Navistar, has a range of 160 kilometres on a charge and can be fully recharged within six to eight hours. Canada Post said that each truck can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as ten tons annually, the equivalent of planting 800 to 900 trees each year.
Unlike other electric trucks that are reconfigured models of fossil fuel vehicles, the eStar has been purpose-built for electric power.
