5.0-litre turbodiesel set for Nissan Titan will find its way in next Toyota Tundra

According to WardsAuto, Nissan won’t be the only Japanese marque to put diesel power – specifically Cummins supplied engines – in its full-size pickups. It’s rumoured the Tundra will also receive the same 5.0-litre turbocharged V8 diesel when it’s fully redesigned for the 2016 model year, however it could be in a different state of tune.

Cummins, who has traditionally supplied Chrysler with engines for its line of heavy-duty pickups, could see a resurgence due to all the new business. However, their supply deal to Toyota could be short lived if the diesel option is popular.

Toyota is said to have been developing a diesel engine in 2007 and 2008 before the economic downturn. The engine was being developed in conjunction with Toyota’s commercial truck subsidiary Hino. WardsAuto says the engine could make a return to Toyota’s development schedule if the company can justify the cost.
