NHTSA Backup Camera Rules Delayed Again

Changing of the guard and other issues plague backup camera rule implementation.

There’s a reason why more and more (and smaller and smaller) vehicles are getting backup cameras. And no, it isn’t because the car companies care about you.

NHTSA was originally set to introduce rules for automakers that would effective make backup cameras a requirement on all vehicles by 2014. But, as with almost anything decided by a government agency, it can take a lot longer than planned.

This time, a changing of the guard is part of the reason for the delay, with US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood leaving office. However, a study into safety rating incentives for vehicles equipped with the technology is also holding things up.

As great as this technology is, do we really need it on a sub-compact hatchback?
