New modular engine sees Cooper and Cooper S getting a little extra horsepower and a lot more torque

When MINI brings the new Cooper and Cooper S to market, they will both feature variations of BMW’s new modular engine architecture and get forced induction. The new 3- and 4-cylinder engines will displace 1.5L and 2.0L respectively, improving horsepower over previous models and delivering a much higher and broader band of torque.

Numbers for the 1.5L TwinPower engine clock in at 136 bhp and 162 lb-ft of torque (170 lb-ft with overboost). But, it’s the delivery of that torque, from 1250 rpm, which is truly impressive and should make the base Cooper much easier to live with from day to day.

The new 2.0L TwinPower engine, basically the same as the 3-cylinder engine but with an additional 0.5L cylinder attached to the end, will provide drivers of the Cooper S with 192 bhp and 207 lb-ft of torque (221 lb-ft with overboost), a great improvement over the current Cooper S output of 181 hp and 177 lb-ft.

Both engines feature direct injection and dual VANOS (variable camshaft control on intake and exhaust).

New gearboxes will make their way into the MINI range, but expect them to keep the cog count to six.

The new MINI’s architecture will be shared with the upcoming 1-Series sedan.
