Highlander-based RX could grow or new model could be added
Lexus could see their lineup of SUVs grow in the near future, or they could grow the dimensions of their RX model, as the brand looks to cash in on demands for a three-row, seven-seat crossover.
Speaking to Lexus chief Jeff Bracken, Automotive News is reporting a three-row crossover is big on dealers’ want lists.
“Third-row seating is the No. 1 issue we hear from dealers,” Lexus Division chief Jeff Bracken said at the auto show here. “We feel like we’re missing a 35,000-units-a-year opportunity. We’re working hard to rectify that.”
The Lexus RX is based on the previous Toyota Highlander. When it was redesigned, the Highlander added extra length in its body without a change in wheelbase and also offers three-row seating. However, the third row is quite cramped in the Highlander and may not be up to par with Lexus customer standards.
Another option is to add a new model to the lineup, possibly with the TX nameplate Lexus has recently applied for. A new vehicle could use the same architecture as the Highlander or go for the more premium rear-wheel drive bones of the Lexus IS and GS.
