33 place scoring pylon to be replaced with more modern version for Brickyard 400

Since 1994, a 33 position scoring pylon has stood over Indianapolis Motor Speedway as an iconic feature near the start-finish line. The structure has now been removed to make way for a new, more modern scoring implement.

Last week, a couple of cranes were used to remove the tower from its base.

The 33 places on the tower are meant for the traditional 33-position Indy 500. However, with NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide Series, and TUDOR United Sportscar Series events, with fields larger than 33 cars, being held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a scoring tower with more places is needed.
