VW’s virtual GTI gets rendered for Gran Turismo, built for Wörthersee

While the recent GT Vision concepts that have been popping up lately are fantastic in a computational kind of way, it’s even better when an automaker goes all the way and builds it for real.

Designed as part of the GT Vision series of vehicles to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Gran Turismo, the GTI Roadster was the product of digital design going analog for the 2014 GTI Meet at Wörthersee.

An internal competition was hosted by Volkswagen to tap the brains of young designers, with the winner selected by Klaus Bischoff, head of design for the Volkswagen brand, and Kaz Yamauchi, creator of the Gran Turismo series.

Powered by a 3.0-litre biturbo V6 producing 496 hp  and 369 lb-ft of torque, the two-seat roadster weighs only 1420 kg, allowing a sprint to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds onto a top speed of 309 km/h.
