VW AG aims to take top premium spot from BMW, overall sales crown from Toyota

To say Volkswagen is steadfastly focused on becoming the top sales champion might be a slight understatement. The German company desperately wants to knock Toyota off the top spot in global sales and it plans to do so by getting Audi ahead of BMW in the premium segment.

According to Bloomberg, Volkswagen is increasing the future investment in the Audi brand to 24 billion euros ($29 billion US) in an effort to make the four-ringed brand the top seller in the premium segment globally. Audi already leads BMW in European and Chinese markets.

“We are making large investments in the innovative areas of electric mobility, connectivity and lightweight construction,” Chief Executive Officer Rupert Stadler said in the statement.

Much of the new investment will go toward new models, such as the Q1 subcompact utility, and expanding manufacturing through new factories in Mexico and other regions.
