First Edition model to start at $81,500

Volvo officially pulled the cover of the updated XC90 yesterday evening in Stockholm, giving us full details on the new full-size Swedish SUV.

In the XC90’s 14-year history, this is only the second generation of the Cross Country family hauler.

“This is one of the most important days in our history. We are not just launching a car, but re-launching our brand. This day marks a new era for our company. The XC90 paves the way for a portfolio of exciting new cars to come in the following years,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car Group.

The XC90 heralds a new design language as well as a new modular platform called Scalable Product Architecture, the latter to be used for every vehicle produced by Volvo going forward. The new SUV model is also the first product of an $11b USD investment programme, said Volvo in a release.

Head of design, Thomas Ingenlath, has ushered in a new design language that’s much more modern, masculine, and refined than the old Volvo face, while still retaining much of what makes a Volvo distinctive.

“The overall impression, both exterior and interior, has a strong connection to the key elements of the Swedish lifestyle: the generous space, the celebration of light and the focus on wellbeing,” said Ingenlath.

Some of that lasting impression will be made with wheels up to 22-inches in size while the rest of the car oozes with Swedish style.

Interiors are also vastly upgraded, possibly becoming the new benchmark in the automotive industry, besting Audi, when they finally arrive on Volvo dealer lots.

A tablet-like touchscreen, like the one used in the Tesla Model S, features an almost button-free experience for the driver. The approach gave designers a way to make the interior “modern, spacious, and uncluttered.”

Volvo also aims to make the XC90 exhilarating to drive with a top-end Twin Engine setup, the product of a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, producing approximately 400 hp.

But, Volvo hasn’t forgotten their roots and aims to make the XC90 the safest SUV in the segment, including two “world first safety technologies” – run-off road protection and auto brake at intersection capability.

These technologies, along with future developments, are part of Volvo’s Vision 2020 goal that states no occupant should be killed or seriously injured in a Volvo by 2020.

When the XC90 arrives in Canada, it will go on sale with a starting price of $60,700.

However, if you are looking to be one of the first 1,927 owners of an XC90 – celebrating the year Volvo was founded 87 years ago – be prepared to pony up $81,500 for a First Edition model. All of these limited edition units will be available exclusively by digital commerce at Volvo Cars’ website on September 3rd at 10:00am EST.
