The Chevelle was everything from a 6 cylinder fleet car to a monster muscle car, but you're right, there really isn't a place in the current Chevrolet lineup.

I suspect they just want to ensure they maintain the rights to the name.

Oh, I know, you could get the Chevelle as a brown, 4 door commuter car with a slant 6.......however.....the LS6 powered 1970 SS is the one to remember:

A few years earlier Chrysler did the same with the old Dart name plate...and look how that turned out.

This is something I suspected as well but in order for the trademark to be valid Chevrolet needs to use the name. This application shows intent to use the trademark. But, only once it is used (which must be in the next three years) will it become valid.

You do know that the next Camero will be based off the ATS platform.  Which means they probably won't have room for another sports car off the ATS platform (what with the 4 door & 2 door ATS, plus all those Camero makes).  I think the only logical use of it would be in the new SS.  That being said it makes more sense to me that they only did this for the making of parts for previous gens.

Personally I'm hoping more for Ford to make a sedan out of their next generation Mustang.  I'd totally buy a 4 door Mustang (obviously it wouldn't be called a Mustang).

I think this guy is based off of the ATS platform. There was some talk of it making ot to production, but I haven't heard anything is a while.

Edit. I wasn't paying close enough attention and this is a photoshop of the 130R shown below.  ;D

This thing here- Code 130R, I think its RWD. Small little thingy to compete with the BRZ. I bet this is what the Chevelle will be.

They should pull an Infiniti G-type play with a Mustang-based sedan. Get the sports car (350Z/Mustang), add two doors and some luxury items, then sell it as their luxury marque (Infiniti/Lincoln). I'd absolutely love to see a RWD Lincoln sports sedan.

Then you would see some weird line-up roll reversal. The Chevelle has historically (IIRC) been above the Camaro and below the Corvette.
