Later on, I’ll take the neighbour for a spin and he’ll remark on how nice they’ve made the interior of this car. It’s small, but not cramped, and there’s twice the cargo area of a 911, and any number of cubbyholes and hidden spaces, and yes, you can fit golf bags. Small ones.

The sky turns pink as I pass the five sails of Canada Place and thread through back to Georgia with the yachts of Coal Harbour on my right and glittering glass columns of luxury apartments on my left. The city’s just starting to wake up, and reach the crest of the Lion’s Gate Bridge, a guy in a brand-new Ferrari F12 is going the other way. We wave at each other.

This is a fantastic little car, crazily expensive in some ways, yet within mortal reach in others. Yes, for the same money you could buy a Stingray or a Certified Pre-Owned 997 Carrera S, but I’d say it stands up to the comparison. It’s smoother and better balanced than the 911, nimbler than the ‘Vette. It might not put the numbers down in the same way, but it feels like a proper sports car in that you don’t have to have your fun restricted to the racetrack or risk incarceration.

Home at last and a brief glance over the options list reveals a few things to be bemused about. Bose stereo system – why bother? $560 for a Sport Design wheel? Should be standard. Sport Chrono’s a must-have, but does a throttle-response system and a silly dashpod stop watch really need to cost over two grand?

Overall though, option this little crocodilian correctly and it’s one of the most engaging, rewarding driving machines on the road. And if you’ve got one – hey, the early bird gets the worm.
