The 3.5L V6 is also silky throughout its rev range and seems a perfect match to its electric drivetrain mate.  In EV mode, the Highlander can move itself along in stop and go traffic with near silence and without burning any fuel – making such a sizeable and accommodating vehicle a great – if unlikely – urban carpool choice.

Handling is typical of a mid-sized SUV like this, which is to say, somewhat slow and devoid of any meaningful communication about what the tires are doing.  That said, it tracks straight and true on the highway and handles curves no worse than its primary competitors.

The Toyota’s regenerative braking tends to be a little grabby at first, followed by a spongy feel, but fully capable of arresting speed from the heavy hybrid.

The Highlander still looks good, too.  A recent refresh to the grille and headlight treatment arguably keeps this SUV as the most attractive in its class.  When compared to the Pilot (which appears more of a top-hat on wheels), the Toyota is downright sleek looking.

Inside, styling is clean with controls that are sensibly laid out and very easy to use.  However, it should be noted that some of the materials and textures are a little cheap and plasticky feeling for a vehicle costing more than $50,000.   The graphic screen atop the dash that shows hybrid power information is comically low resolution and reminds you that this generation of Highlander is on the cusp of being renewed.

It’s also surprising to note some key features absent from the Highlander found on many cars costing thousands less.  Heated steering wheel, cooled seats, lane departure warning, active cruise control and collision mitigation are all unavailable on the Highlander at any price.

Considering its usable interior space and efficiency for its size, along with a reputation for high build quality and longevity, even nearing the end of its production run, the current Highlander Hybrid is a solid choice.
