What a great highway car! This is how I feel about the CC after a few days behind the wheel. Not that the CC is a bad city car necessarily, as it performs perfectly fine around town, but out on the highway it really shines with a compliant suspension, little wind and tire noise and excellent cruising range and comfort.

Volkswagen’s computer system displays both a trip and tank fuel consumption average and my drive into work has netted me 6.9 L/100 km for two days straight – impressive for a vehicle that is anything but small and offers a decent amount of power to haul itself around in style.

I’m really enjoying the cushioning of the door panel armrests; some of the softest armrests I’ve encountered in a long while keep my elbows happy. The small side mirrors are a let-down, though, as is the rather bland front end design.

Driving the CC is enjoyable as it offers reasonably good handling dynamics that will satisfy most consumers shopping in this class of vehicle, even equipped with winters tires as my tester is.

When called upon, the CC will accelerate briskly and the quick and smooth-shifting DSG transmission is seamless once moving. As is typical with automated manual gearboxes like the DSG, when reversing or creeping forward slowly you will notice an odd, on/off type of sensation, which is the computer attempting to slip the clutch to get you moving. It isn’t horrible but it is odd when you are not used to it, especially if you are trying to move only a few inches forward, or when reversing up a slope.
