Volkswagen jumped on the four five-door coupe bandwagon today, unveiling its Sport Coupe Concept GTE at the Geneva auto show.

This car looks to us like a hatchback version of the CC sedan, combining a sleek profile with a long, 118.9-inch wheelbase and what looks to be a huge cargo area. This concept’s other trick is a gas-electric hybrid drivetrain that combines a 3.0L TSI V6 with plug-in hybrid tech; VW says the gas motor is good for 295 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, and the electric motor rated at 168 hp and 374 lb-ft. Combined power won’t be anything as generous as the sum of those numbers, but VW also claims a 32-km all-electric range, fuel economy in the range of 118 mpg (US), and enough scoot to go from zero to 100 km/h in five seconds.

Much as the trend toward calling hatchbacks by any other name bugs us, VW can call this thing whatever it wants if they decide to build it, especially if the production version is half as handsome as the concept.
