As mentioned above, the Ghibli’s design is based on the larger Quattroporte, but the goal, according to Maserati, was to make it a more aggressive, dynamic expression of that car. As is the trend among many manufacturers, the body shape is coupe-like. The grille, such an important feature for any car, takes its inspiration from the current Maserati GranTurismo, drawing a line back to the classic A6 GCS of the 1950s. Of course, this is something that you get with historically deep brands like Maserati: tradition, familiarity, breeding (Juan Manuel Fangio competed in a Maserati; Stirling Moss won the Monaco and Italian Grands Prix in one). Even the Maserati trident badge is legendary; the brand has pedigree!

Although similar to the Quattroporte inside, the Ghibli has its own dashboard design, complete with Poltona Frau (exclusive Italian leather furniture maker) leather finish. A 60:40 split-folding rear seat expands cargo capacity beyond the already generous 500 L available in the trunk. Maserati describes its ventilated centre console compartment as “capacious,” supplementing interior storage space with large door pockets and a ventilated glovebox. Wheels start at 18 inches, with 19, 20 and 21 inches available.

The standard driver’s seat offers six-way power adjustment and the base Ghibli arrives with real leather upholstery. Two higher levels of leather trim are optional. The Ghibli S models use more supportive seats, with memory and eight-way adjustment. Adjustable pedals are also optional.

Ghibli S standard equipment includes leather seats, wood trim, eight-way electrically adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate controlled air conditioning and active cruise control, with bi-xenon adaptive front headlight system, and fixed brake calipers.

Unveiled initially at the Shanghai Motor Show, the Ghibli, according to Maserati, “marks a turning point in the company’s history.” It marks the first time in Maserati’s history that two four-door sedans will be offered concurrently. The Torino factory has been completely refurbished, and an extensive reliability program initiated that included six-million test kilometres with a fleet of more than 90 Ghiblis, testing in extreme heat in South Africa and Morocco and in extreme cold in Sweden and New Zealand. In production, each car receives over 700 control checks, and every finished Ghibli has a final, 30-minute quality audit and is tested on-road before delivery.

After all, if you’re going to take on the Germans in the luxury sector, your product needs to be ready!

When asked in Los Angeles when the Maserati Ghibli would be available in Canada, a Maserati representative answered, “It’s already there!”

But in very limited numbers, apparently. We currently have on only six Maserati dealers in Canada: two in Montreal, two in Toronto and one each in Calgary and Vancouver. There are 70 dealers in the US, with plans to increase to 100. A company representative indicates there are plans to expand to Laval, Quebec and Oakville, Ontario, and possibly more.
