Volkswagen have just announced a recall for 41,308 vehicles in Canada and a further 420,000 in the U.S. for a potential fault in the airbag system preventing deployment in a case of a crash. Debris, such as long hairs or fibres, may cause interference with the internal guide loops in the system.

The hairs or fibres may drag the guide loops (clock spring) out of position and add enough tension to a wire in the system to actually tear it. If the wire is severed, the signal to driver’s airbag will be lost, resulting in an airbag light and a failure to deploy in the case of a crash. Currently, no deaths or injuries have been reported due to this fault.

Models affected are listed below:

  • 2010 – 2014 Volkswagen CC
  • 2011 – 2013 Volkswagen EOS
  • 2011 – 2014 Volkswagen Golf
