Mazda has just announced that the Mazda2 compact already removed from the 2016 US lineup has also received the boot from the Canadian offering. Let’s all take a moment to let that sink in.

Some will say we should have seen that one coming considering the manufacturer unveiled the upgraded 2 in Montreal earlier this year with the promise of a summer launch before pushing back the date to 2016. Removing their only subcompact model from the North American market altogether is a bold decision by the Japanese giant, but with the unstoppable tidal wave of compact crossovers taking the market by storm, it seems like there’s very little space left for teeny tiny cars. In fact, the Mazda Canada site has already removed the model from its online catalogue.

Mazda plans to focus their energy on the CX family, clearly feeling that represents the biggest growth opportunity, notably with the launch of an updated CX-9 scheduled to take place at the LA auto show.
