New owner raided by prosecutors
Motorsport.com is reporting the future of the German Grand Prix is up in the air. According to German outlets, new owner Capricorn Group was raided last week by local prosecutors “amid allegations of fraud.”
While the headline at the racing focused website reads Ecclestone doubts Germany to host 2015 race, the bigger story here might be the future of the track itself.
The Nurburgring has become the neutral testing and battle ground for many automakers, especially those developing sports cars, over the last few years. Capricorn Group, a German auto parts company, won a bidding process for the track in March of last year. It’s estimated the group paid 100 million euros for the facility.
If fraud allegations prove true, this could put the Nurburgring back in the same situation it started a couple of years ago — lacking the proper funding, digging itself into debt, and the grim reaper waiting at pit entry.
