In certain automotive segments, doors that open on their own would be considered a feature; in some Ford and Lincoln vehicles, however, it’s a flaw that has led to the company recalling nearly 400,000 vehicles to fix bad door latches.

In September 2014, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) officials began investigating reports of doors failing to latch or inadvertently opening on Ford Fiesta models from model years 2011 through 2013, and 2013 models of the Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ models.

The NHTSA reports two minor injuries caused by doors that bounced back open when a latch failed to catch and keep it shut; another incident involved a door swinging open and striking another car as a driver pulled into a parking space.

Neither the NHTSA nor Transport Canada have posted this recall to their respective websites, but according to Automotive News, it will soon be made official; Ford will notify the owners of affected vehicles and instruct dealers to replace all four door latches with upgraded parts.
