Redline
« on: September 26, 2017, 10:00:40 pm »
Guys tonight on my way home about 30 minutes into my hwy drive I was driving in the passing lane behind a left lane driver. I was in 6th gear doing about 105 when I decided to pull into the right lane and pass. The douch in the left lane realized that I was about to pass and immediately speeds up. My testies grew big and decide to go faster but the new Evoque (white and driven by a young girl) was pulling away so without thinking and being overrun by my testies I decided to drop to 5th then to 4th and finally to 3rd. I managed to pass but I also saw my revs going to redline. This was like for a few seconds and I upshifted immediately to 6th. Should I worry about any potential damage to the engine? This was the first ever for me.

The car is fine.  And they are designed to run up to redline.

You should actually run the car up to redline every now and again too.  Doesn't hurt anything...and is fun.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

hehe I dont get all this fear of running a car to redline...why are people so scared of it?

they are designed for that, that is why the redline is there, and as rrocket said it can be beneficial to run them to it every so often for an "Italian tune up" - my owners manual for my Alfa actually calls for it every few thousand km to keep things in order.

my wife is afraid I hurt the car every time she can hear the engine, I guess I should be glad her next car will be electric
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

I'm afraid to run my Maxima to the redline, I'm sure all that power to the front wheels will pull me right off the road!!

Only one way to find out!!!

I once took the Miata to redline and I was immediately launched into orbit and had I not been able to masterly steer back into the atmosphere without burning up, it would have been all over.

While I was there, I did see this guy...

I love the Italian tune up.  Once bought a '69 Caprice, 327...couldn't spin on gravel.  A month or so of hard 18 yr old bagging it to within an inch of it's Co-op tired life, and it was ripping the treads on its own with great frequency (both times and amount of screeching). Ok, I still had to depress the gas pedal, but smokey burnouts weren't a problem after all the "old man" was rinsed away with a couple of tanks of gas.

Yes, there is nothing wrong with running an engine up to its redline. One concern however is that the OP was downshifting, not running up through the gears. There is a chance that they were going faster than allowed in 3rd gear and the engine was over-revved. I'm not sure what the gearing is like in a mazda 3, maybe 105 in 3rd gear is ok, maybe its not?

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Pretty sure that it would have a rev limiter... so the engine would cut out at too high of RPM's   :banghead:

^ true if you are running up through the gears, however if you downshift into too low of a gear, it is entirely possible to over-rev the engine. My car will bounce off the rev limiter in 2nd gear around 88km/h, used to happen regularly at autocross events with no discernible damage. (175k and going strong...) What happens if I downshift to 2nd gear at 100km/h?

It's easy to mechanically over-rev an engine.  There's no shortage of youtube videos of morons popping their engines because of a down-shift f-up.

Yes, that is what I was getting at. Not sure if the OP over-revved or not by downshifting to 3rd at highway speeds.

Sounds like he went 5 to 4 & then 4 to 3 and then ran it up to the redline.

That wouldn't have happened with properly inflated Hercules tires.  ;D

It was 6 to 5 to 4 and then 3. Then I realized that my tach is around 6500 or maybe was 6200, not to sure ( my car has a digital tach and is kind of small) as I shifted up immediately. It was only a few seconds. No strange sounds or explosions happened. My car drove as usual this morning. But for some reason keep thinking about it and hope that there is no damage.
