I don't think anyone has suggested this but does fit your parameters and most likely budget as well.

Would you consider a Mitsubishi RVR?  You can get the upgraded 2.4l engine, similar size to the Subaru Crosstrek, AWD with higher seating position, 10 year powertrain warranty.  For another $3,000 you can extended the comprehensive warranty out to 10 years as well.

Is it the best CUV on the market?  No, but it might be a good fit for your needs.

Personally I prefer 5-60 rolling starts, closer to real world.

Passat TDI

Rolling start, 5-60 mph: 9.4 sec
Top gear, 30-50 mph: 4.2 sec
Top gear, 50-70 mph: 6.2 sec

Crosstrek
Rolling start, 5-60 mph: 10.5 sec
Top gear, 30-50 mph: 5.3 sec
Top gear, 50-70 mph: 6.7 sec

2017 Corolla

Rolling start, 5-60 mph: 9.9 sec
Top gear, 30-50 mph: 4.4 sec
Top gear, 50-70 mph: 6.1 sec

They are all very similar. None will win a race but nothing wrong with them.

Be that as it may, every review of the Crosstrek seems to harp on about the lack of oomph

CX-3?  0% financing right now, too.  It's also the size that I want.

Don't kid yourself  ;)

$27K for a 4 year old RX with 180km?!?!  ::) :rofl2:

Did you check what the 450H costs new? With options?
I'd haggle them down to 25k and it would be a great deal IMO since Toyota hybrids drive to half a million km with just regular maintenance. The SUV was likely serviced at the same dealership, has clean carproof based on their description, so I don't see any red flags...

I think those mini-utes are BRILLIANT.  Seriously.  They're the new compact hatches that we're all pining for.  It's just that regular people won't buy hatches anymore - everything has to look like an SUV.  So, Honda, Toyota, Mazda, etc are giving us hatches, just disguised as SUVs.  Nice.

If I get to the point where I don't need to lug around something huge like the Highlander for my mountain trips (maybe once we're living in the mountains and the kid is gone) I'd look really hard at any of the AWD variants in this class.  Perfect for an outdoorsey empty-nest couple.

they just launched a "Black Edition" as well...i know, i know...it's marketing fluff...but it looks good.

I think the CX-3 is brilliant! If you are okay with that size of small CUV...back seat is a little tight depending how tall you are but trunk is decent sized! I'd go for one in a heartbeat if price was right.

A Mazda dealer says the CX-3 will finally have a manual in the 2018 model year. GX only.

Yah and I bet it will be FWD only as well, so that's a big pass for me.

What? The back seat is VERY tight unless you are 3 feet tall. The trunk is also small unless you only need it for a small items.

Yea. In this segment, I'd choose the HR-V hands down.

I'd suggest trying out the HRV and CX-3 back to back and see which one you like best, then go from there deal wise.  Both are likely equal in quality.  I'd say the CX-3 is the looker of the two, but the HRV is not bad looking either, and i find it much better looking than the CRV.

^  The CX-3 has one huge plus going for it... no CVT.
I think it and the HR V are within spitting distance for hp,  i'd bet the Mazda would be much better to drive.

My SIL bought the HR-V a few months ago.  Had a drive in it a while ago... the CVT had the same sluggish delayed response that drives me nuts in the Crosstrek.  It does have the trick Fit interior though.

HONDA FIT.

Lacks ground clearance. Otherwise, a great suggestion.

The ground clearance would be the only issue. You're not really sinking down into the seats either. It's not all that low.

The magic seats are amazing too. And I've come to love the lanewatch camera. I'd go HRV no doubt

she already stated she is all by herself most of the time...if she needs more space, just fold the rear seats and boom! or remove the hatch cover and boom!

Exactly.  That's what I always did with Miss Jetta.  I used to throw my bike back there!

The only time I ever have a car full of people now is when we're setting up cars at both ends of our hikes.  My friends would have to endure a tight back seat for about 15 minutes every two weeks.  Plus, since I'm not the one sitting back there, who gives a sh*t?   :rofl2:
