I just feel sad for people who love perennially terrible teams. Maple Leafs, Detroit Lions, etc.

Same here.  I'm a die hard Oilers fan, but I still root for all the Canadian teams.  It's been 26 years since a Canadian team has won the Cup, so it would be nice to see any/all of the Canadian teams do well.

I haven't seen any recent stats, but I'm guessing that most teams in the NHL are comprised a good portion of Canadian players.

Apparently, last year was lowest ever at 49.7 percent Canadian.  A "normal" year is about 55% over the last ~15 years
