Oddest ghost cars you've seen?
« on: August 30, 2016, 09:50:49 am »
The P71 in the Seen on the Weekend thread got me thinking about some of the weirder police ghost cars I've seen.

While in NB a few weeks ago, I noticed a red 2012 or earlier Ford Escape with tints. Both times it had people pulled over on the highway near Moncton. The strobes were of course hidden by the tints and in the grill. Beyond that it looked like a regular mid-trim Escape.

The old NB Highway patrol had a black 5.0 Aerobird for a while.

The Maine State Troopers used to use a GMC (IIRC) dumptruck with a radar setup to nail people on the interstate. A second car would do the actual take down. A pursuit in a dumptruck would be kind of funny though.

Anyone else?

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Windsor, ON was full of these back when I went to school there. There was a F-150 with the lights behind the grille and built into the roll bar that would sit in the left hand turn lane with it's signal on, then pick off oncoming speeders.

There was an equally discreet Camaro (4th gen) and even a Silverado SS.

Apparently they still use unmarked Camaros (5th gen) and have switched to Ram 1500 and 2500s and Grand Caravans.

^ Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about the grey Ram 1500s in town here. Very sneaky.

This of course is one of my all-time favs. Can't imagine trying to outrun it in the hands of a trained professional.

Toronto Police or the OPP used to have a car that looked like an airport limo patrol the highways around Pearson airport. And the NYPD had a crown vic done up like a Taxi at one point.

Calgary used to use an old pickup that appeared to be broken down.

The RCMP around here have several full size pickups that they use.

I recall earlier days when the local RCMP had a couple of ghost cars and they'd put baseball caps in the back window where the red and blue lights were, so that you'd assume it was just Bubba with his ball caps.

They also had a couple of cars with rental stickers on them, back in the days when the rental companies had a logo sticker on the bumper.

My diesel car self-identifies as an electric vehicle.

The only unmarked car I'm aware of locally is a painfully obvious Taurus with steel wheels and black plastic door handles. So it's odd in the sense that they're not even trying.  :P

Edmonton gang unit has a old Toyota Highlander and Nissan Pathfinder.. completely unmarked and no visible lights until they turn them on. Very sneaky and impossible to spot with the lights off.

Ford Ranger extended cab, with a canopy, on Highway 1 between Port Mann and Abbotsford a couple years back.  Also seen, in the same stretch, a F250 crew cab.

I'm assuming Fredericton? They aren't exactly known for imagination or flights of fancy.

The difference between Fredericton and Moncton is similar to the difference between Toronto and Montreal. Imagine a drunken, womanizing, gambler, then picture an accountant.  ;D

Moncton elected an accountant as Mayor?

The stuffy bureaucrats in Fredericton, both provincial and municipal, will never, ever be accused of being drunken, womanizing gamblers.

It took them almost 6 years to approve a grocery store (oh the SCANDAL) on the plat.

Mississauga has a couple Crown Vics with Taxi paint schemes, only the sign on the roof says "Police". I've also seen older (like early 2000's) GM minivans with hidden lights, but I think they only come out around special events where the need for a totally discreet vehicle is required.

I've also seen the RAMs used in Windsor.
