and canuck.. i would love to have a guy like you detail my car, make my beer and who knows what other skills you have!
just had a guy want to trade in his srt 300... (older than the other thread starter wants)... worth about 16, owes 32. wants into a loaded durango citadel... best part is that he wants to either lower or keep his payments where they are... oh, and he's sub-prime... i'm sure due to such good decisions as this. i told him that i wasn't comfortable doing a deal and he would have to go to the dealer in toronto he had been talking to earlier.
How can he be so upside down on an older car like that!? I understand being upside down in year 1 thru maybe 3 of a 5yr car loan, but on something like this that's older!? Unless he's just rolling debt over & over into the new loan? Also, are you saying $16k is the trade in value on the car, or actual resale value?
I put zero down on my Wrangler last summer and got a sh*tty interest rate, but after 13 months of ownership, I think I'd be out ahead right now, or break even! I owe about another ~$29k on it and I see them listed in the $32k - $35k range for models similar to mine.
I hate to break it to you, but I've been in your position, and you're probably still significantly upside down. There's a couple of things going against you. One is how much you owe. Have you actually phoned your finance company and asked them what the buy-out amount is at this moment? It's probably more than $29K even after 13 months. I have no idea what your amortization is, but if it's 5 or 6 years or more, and your interest rate is 10% or so, you've probably only paid off a couple grand or so of your principal so far.
2nd is the trade in value. You may see them listed at $32-$35K range, but you would likely get nowhere near that if you were looking to trade in. Dealer may give you $16-$17K for a trade. Even if trying to sell privately, you'd have to settle for mid-high twenties in order to move the car in a timely manner.
Anyway, I don't want to be a buzzkill, and I'm certainly not an expert, I'm just relaying my experiences. It's ALWAYS worse than you think it is.
