Boy, that is a strong value proposition!  Too bad it doesn't have a hatch.  I see GM as having a difficult time convincing its followers to buy this kind of vehicle but maybe the ice is getting thinner here.  Once the GM customer base does embrace all electrics and hybrids, products like the Volt will leave GM in a great position to exploit that growing market.

I'm not a GM fan but the Volt seems to me to be world class and a brilliant concept.  I hope GM does very well with it since the company certainly deserves to.   GM has been burned before being an innovator (read Corvair) but this time, I bet it works out for them.

Cheers,
John M.

FACK - that's not the price.  That's the price IN ONTARIO.

Maybe the injustice of the price differentials will force other provincial governments to introduce similar rebates.  If we can have (roughly) equality of health care across Canada, surely we can have equality of SOTA hybrid car pricing.  I smell a charter of rights challenge!

Ontario has the highest SUB SOVERIGN DEBT in the WORLD.  The province is facked and it's in for a SEVERE restructuring which will make today's Alberta seem like Monte Carlo.

Why in the world are we borrowing money to subsidize EVs/Hybrids.   It's beyond comprehension.   :P

Totally agree with the observations regarding the misleading headline of the article. A vehicle's price is the MSRP, minus any incentives, rebates, discounts, etc. that one can take advantage of or haggle. I also don't understand the $29,890 figure. A new Volt is $38,900 + $1600 = $40,500.
Apply the Ontario rebate of $8500 and we have $32,000. Am I missing something?

That being said, however, GM has basically held the line on pricing in Canada for the new Volt. A great deal any way you look at it for a state of the art car that doesn't require gas. If I was a power at GM, I would actually lobby Ontario to cut the rebate completely, as I believe it actually hurts sales elsewhere in Canada. I damn well won't buy one in NL and be forced to pay $8500 more than those in Ontario.

Actually, yes...you are missing something.  The Ontario rebate is applied to the AFTER TAX value of the vehicle.  Not the pre-tax value.

So that makes the headline even more misleading, doesn't it?  That would make the actual vehicle cost ~$31,000...wouldn't it (I didn't add in the $1,600)?  Where are the moderators?  They must be

The moderators are busy humans, just like you who don't see everything. Besides, I know I've personally told you many times now that if you think there's something needing immediate attention to use the old "report" button.
Not to mention you have a PM system here on the forum.  (as per this thread: http://www.autos.ca/forum/index.php?topic=92781.msg1101507)
Anyway, you guys are right, this story is not accurate and I'll be editing it now.
Apologies this slipped through the cracks - busy day to day.

News stories, because of their timely nature and because we have good faith in our guys occasionally get left alone. Chris and Ronnie frequently cast a quick eye over each other's work. All other things are edited by either Jonathan (who is very good and misses very little) or by me (who has not quite the attention to detail he does) before they go live. I hope this is satisfactory. :D

I was just wondering how it works for you guys, that's all.

So I have to ask.....if the "old" Volt cost $40,595 including freight and A/C tax, that means the new one is only $5 cheaper, right?  It's $38,890+$1600+$100 (AC Tax)= $40,590.  $5.  Or am I missing something?

This is a very, VERY far cry from Reuss telling us the next Volt would be "$7,000-$10,000 USD cheaper", isn't it?

My apologies, folks. I was suffering form a severe case of "Ontario is the centre of the universe syndrome". Please accept my humble apologies. I really hate making this kind of mistake. The misleading headline was NOT intentional by any means. I hate clickbait misleading headlines myself and I am not a fan... so I am truly sorry.

Also, the math was taken directly from the GM press release. Those are the prices after rebate I was given and I will double check with them on it tomorrow. GM's press release tells me the price is $29,890. I'll update as soon as I get a response.

Cheers!

This is the cost breakdown according to GM's maths:

$38,390 - $8,500 = $29,890, putting the cost of the Volt under 30k in Ontario. Then, add $1,600 for freight and destination. That's the price, folks.

Apologies for the typo and error of provincial proportions in the title.

Is there any indication of what the optional equipment will be and how much? Navi/leather/collision mitigation? As far as I can see, this is a Cruze with a fancy drivetrain, LEDs, heated seats/steering wheel for nearly double the price, less 1/4 thanks to the Ont Gov't.

My calc prices the Volt this way. Never bought a new car where the price of shipping was not included in the total price of the car , so ...

($38,390+$1,600) x 1.13 = $45,189 - $8,500 = $36,689
